I realized that I haven't put up a "How To" for the steps in logging into Raz-Kids.
1. Go to: www.raz-kids.com/main/Login and type in "sliang1".

Hi everyone, I realized that I haven't put up a "How To" for the steps in logging into Raz-Kids. 1. Go to: www.raz-kids.com/main/Login and type in "sliang1". 2. 3. Select your child's password (check your blue folder for the log-in information) and then click the green arrow. If you have any questions, reach out to me here, on e-mail, or Remind. Happy reading!!!

Hi everyone, We're going to be starting our NEW writing unit soon: Authors as Mentors. During this unit, we write in the style of Ezra Jack Keats . Notice these features in different books your child reads:
Read along with me to two books by Ezra Jack Keats: Hi everyone, It's incredible that it is already December and we're about a third of the way done with school. We finished our personal narratives and are currently working on our HOW TO writing unit. Continue to have your children tell you how to do things in order. Since October, we have had Buddy Reading with Ms. Esther's third graders. They are also our editing partners who tell us our Glows (something we did well) and Grows (something we are working on). Yes, being a first grader is a lot of work. On top of drafting, writing, revising, editing, and illustrating, we also practice our social skills - every day, especially when we play. During play, we utilize life skills that we will be using on a daily basis, such as: following rules, sharing, communicating, collaborating, negotiating, and listening. When we play, we also encourage creativity and hands-on activity.
Take some time to play with your children. If you don't have games at home, you can always create your own game! Love, Ms. Liang Hi everyone! There was no overlap in times for when parents could come visit us in class for our publishing celebration, so we invited Ms. Esther's third graders to be our audience. They gave us feedback on what we did well (glow - like a star!) and what we can do to be better writers (grow - like a flower!). During this unit, we reviewed our writing conventions. As the year goes on, writers will be responsible for more advanced writing conventions. Yes, our first graders are learning a lot of academics. Bear in mind that play is very educational, too. During play, we learn important social skills, such as how to: share, collaborate, imagine, and negotiate. We utilize our counting skills, activate our science brains as we build, and the entire time, we are practicing our language skills as we talk to our peers. Remember to read with your child every day and have them bring back their Take Home Book Baggie so they can read a variety of books from the classroom.
Love, Ms. Liang Hi everyone! We've officially finished nine (9) days of school! We've been busy these last nine days. We came up with five (5) rules as a class:
We worked together at block center and we had different ideas of what it could be. What do you imagine it is? We also read some books that will help us with our learning: We're using the book "I Like Me!" by Miriam Cohen to inspire our writing. Thanks for reading (and watching)! I'm looking forward to a rigorous and exciting year!
Love, Ms. Liang Hi everyone,
It's incredible that June is just a little over a week away! Many of our students have been re-assessed to see what level they are independently reading and thinking on. It's amazing to see the kind of progress they make. As a reminder, here are some things you can work on with your children to help them with their reading skills and strategies:
I'm updating Raz Kids to reflect your reader's current independent reading level. For math, be sure to have your mathematicians SHOW how they know. The answer isn't enough; there should be a number sentence (equation), such as 5 + 7 = 12, AND a sketch (drawing) to match. For our next Writing Unit, we'll be fundraising money towards bee conservation. Be sure to talk to your children about why bees are important: Bees help pollinate foods like almonds (from trees), fruits, and vegetables! Thank you for your help! Love, Ms. Liang Hi everyone,
A lot of handouts have been going home. Here's the gist of some of them:
This week, NYSELAT testing has started for our English Language Learners. It continues into next week. On Friday, June 16th, we have Career Day! We are seeking volunteers to come in to talk to 3 - 4 classes about their Career. You are usually paired with another professional and each of you have about 15 minutes to talk about your career. It usually starts around 9 AM and ends by 12 PM. Let us know if you're available to join us as a presenter! Merry May! Love, Ms. Liang Hi everyone!
It's incredible that we've already been in school for more than 130 days! We are starting to re-assess (test) the children again to see which reading levels are appropriate for them. Here are some things you can work on with your children to help them with their reading skills and strategies:
Have a wonderful May! Best, Ms. Liang Hi everyone,
Today was our Studio in a School exhibition and gallery walk! It was great to see you there! I posted two collages of some highlights of the day on Twitter & Instagram. I realized that I usually update the blog, but it's been quite a while since I've posted on there. Hopefully, that's accessible to you! Our 100th day of school is coming up next Thursday, February 16th - which also happens to be a student's birthday! The week after (February 20th - February 24th) is our Winter Recess! There's a lot of exciting stuff coming up around the corner. Plan some fun stuff to do over the break. Remember to limit screen time (TV, iPad, phones) as it affects their development. NYCGo has a lot of great suggestions! Happy planning! Love, Ms. Liang Hi everyone! Now that we're back from the Winter Recess, we've been, and will continue to, see what kind of progress students are making with their reading levels. As a reminder, after each text, we always ask students to retell what happened. This includes characters, events, dialogue, and relating it back to the title. (If the story is about being hard working, then retells should relate back to that.) We also ask about:
Some of us are also focusing on figuring out tricky words. Here are some of the strategies (ways) that our readers figure out tricky words:
In Writing, writing conventions (such as starting with a capital letter and ending with punctuation) should be something that the kids already know and practice in their everyday writing. Our check it dots remind us of proper writing mechanics: In math, we use the Math Rack (Rekenrek) a lot to help us see numbers. We know that there are 5 red and 5 white on the top and 5 red and 5 white on the bottom. Practice helping your mathematician see numbers - 7 = 5 + 2, 7 = 6 + 1, etc. The artists are wrapping up their sculptures in Studio in a School. I believe the exhibition is the first Tuesday of February. Stay tuned for exact times!
